WASTE

PictureRecycled art using bottle caps
Ruch Outdoor Community School started recycling several years ago with basic paper, cans and plastics recycling.  Recognizing the curriculum value of sustainability, students and staff began to compost and set goals for the next year including: setting up hot compost piles in the Ruch Garden as well as a worm composting system for cafeteria food waste, increasing availability of basic recycling bins in all areas of the school, using more durable dishes in the cafeteria, developing elementary-aged presentations for school-wide training on the importance of recycling, and developing curriculum for a “reuse art” class.

Through composting and recycling, students ask essential questions:

~ Where does our garbage go?
~ What important ingredients help decompose food waste?
~ How does recycling lower environmental damage?
~ What behaviors and routines can reduce the waste generated at a school?
